Culminating Discussions and Thank You Notes


Date: May 15th

The last week in Bethesda is going by really quickly and the days have been focused on tightening loose ends from our research with Laura. We began the morning by reading through three different booklets all in an effort to give us a better understanding for a slide about universal standards of banking. The universal standards were created by Laura’s Social Performance Task Force and the readings gave us in depth analysis and reasoning behind each criteria. After we were done with that we had a long conversation with Laura about the responsibility of banks and microfinance organizations, particularly new client protection standards set after the housing crisis in the United States. Later on Henry and I drafted thank you emails for Kirsten Quigley and Molly Hamilton, who generously brought us in for conversations on entrepreneurship and their startups. To end the day we drove to the airport in D.C. to pick up Kyra, Laura’s daughter, as she returned from her junior year at Brown. We returned home to a steak and chicken dinner with some close friends of Bobby and Kyra awaiting her return.

    Really cool to see how your project is wrapping up, Declan and Henry. I'm so impressed with how you truly investigated the complexities of microfinance. Can't wait to see you again next week!

Date: May 2nd When we woke up today, Laura was on a big conference call until late morning so she sent us some presentations to review about our next topic of discussion. Henry and I reviewed a little bit downstairs before Laura was off the call and ready to talk with us. Day of Research and Adjusting to Bethesda

Date: April 30th The second day of Senior Project was filled with more initial research as we eased into our new roles for the next couple weeks. Today the research was focused on Laura’s microfinance graduate class at Georgetown, which we are going to sit in on early tomorrow evening. We had to become familiar with four different global finance companies: Equity Bank of Kenya, JUMO, BRAC, and Pro Mujer, as those are the four companies that Laura’s students will have to base their final project on. The day was divided between a 10 to 12 shift, and a 1 to 5 shift following an hour of lunch and talking. Afterwords we spent a good chunk of our time learning about the companies, so we wouldn’t be lost during Laura’s class, we got to chat with Laura about the importance of what the organizations were doing.
